The Power of One
#MondayMotivation ✏️❤️True or false: One person can make a huge impact. Sure, while power typically lies in the majority, I also believe in the power of one, even if it means once/week hourly sessions, it accumulated to majorly awesome outcomes [even if they means heads hit the table LOL]. ✏️❤️The kids are learning, reading, spelling, blending, and clicking between monitor screens more than ever before. ✏️❤️ Although my tutoring/coaching might not make life-shattering changes, I am truly honored to be able to help people even in the slightest way. I feel so blessed!✏️🍎I’d be happy to make a small impact on your life, too, so reach out if you want some consultation/advice for yourself or a student!!
Drive Cleanup
#Mondaymotivation 💫💙Any other teachers get the thrill of logging on (or off) with students to have a very meaningful virtual session together?!?
.
For me, it’s a refreshing feeling of taking action that my students are not being complacent or stagnant, and they are bound to improve.
.
In this time, our students are being taxed with so much technologically...I truly don’t know how they can keep up alongside keeping up with their schoolwork.
.
My students (tell their parents) that it’s helpful and I agree..because it’s doing something positive! Everyone wins here!
.
The truth is, all kids are in need of some guidance, even for 5-10 minutes, to build up their #executivefunction skills.
.
Ways you can help- initiate a “cleanup” time every week to review all emails and a second time during the week to “cleanup” the Google drive files.
.
I can help you help your child build these skills. 💫💙

Mask On 2020
#mondaymotivation #getitdone #winteriscoming
.
No matter what ... my families’ needs come first⤵️
.
With #covid cases reportedly rising, so are people’s nerves and anxiety 😥
.
😷My mask is making a comeback to tutoring sessions for those who request it.
.
➡️We have been..and continue to go through so much in 2020... so it’s things like this that help parents have #peaceofmind during my #tutoringsession
.
⭐️I work to the best of my ability to give kids an above and beyond experience during our time together...
.
😷☺️😂laughter and learning are par for the course...mask on or mask off!

Get Through the Uncomfortable
😅#motivationmonday 😅Around here, specifically in the north Jersey summer heat & humidity, I am always trying to go the extra mile...👣👣👣
.
...even if it means schvitzing and feeling uncomfortable for a second or a two during mid-day outdoor sessions😅😅😅
.
I’ve learned the following 👉🏼 outdoor tutoring is just on a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL. I don’t care about the sweat, but when the light-headedness starts to kick in...🤒
.
👣👣👣But we keep going! And i keep accommodating for my clients. Like a rough workout, there’s always an end!
.
😅😅😅And like i tell them kids...when you get through uncomfortable moments, you just feel stronger and more confident that you can do more hard things!!!

💫I want nothing more than to make that a reality, especially right right now when the school year is a few weeks in, the weather is turning colder, and our kids are exhausted from looking at hours of screen time.
💫Whether it is in-person or virtual tutoring, I am here for you the whole way, especially to supplement children’s learning experiences.
.
💫I’m dedicated to giving kids the best experience possible - whether it’s on the deck, backyard patio, porch, or Zoom.

End of Year Motivation
#mondaymotivation 🌟It’s the Monday after Christmas 🎄, Hanukkah ended over a week ago, and Kwanzaa is still in full effect.
.
📦Wherever your family is in the celebration and the winter break, I’m sure packing up those holiday decorations is on your to-do list at some point. 🤷🏻♀️
.
💃🏻Whenever you do decide to get around to it, make it fun. 🎶Turn on some upbeat music and invite your kids or family members to help.
.
😅Consider even making it a game! For example, who can⤵️
.
📍consolidate decorations the best into [the least number of] storage containers? 📍Who use the least amount of bubble wrap?
📍Who can organize the decorations the best AND pack them away quickest?
.
And, you can do this by turning cleaning/organizing into a race between your kids! Create a checklist with items for each child and whoever completes theirs first gets to choose the Family Game night game.🎲♟🎮🎳
.
😅🎶👯♀️At least from my experience, taking down decorations is MUCH MORE fun when with a partner AND with fun music going on in the background.
.
🌟And let’s face it, completing tasks together creates a stronger bond between people.

Trivia
#motivationmonday 💠Did you know that Monday, January 4th is National Trivia Day?!
.
💠Trivia is a great way to improve cognitive skills.
.
🧠 Many of our kids struggle to retain information, so trivia games are a great exercise for the mind.
.
🤓Trivia also allows their prior knowledge to grow and improve working memory, leading to greater creativity, conversation, innovation, and problem-solving skills.
.
🧠Trivia is yet another important tool to help facilitate your child or teen’s developing brain.
.
💠 Take some time this week to play a trivia game with your students/children, and even see if you can make Trivia Night a weekly habit.
.
My favorites are Brain Quest, Trivial Pursuit, and Jeopardy!
.
🤓🤓🤓 And speaking of GENNY Trivia, here are the answers from this past Sunday’s IG Stories:
1️⃣ AM vs. PM workouts ➡️➡️➡️ I enjoy AM workouts 😅
2️⃣ teal vs. black ➡️➡️➡️ I enjoy both, but wear black MUCH more 🖤
3️⃣ baking vs. cooking ➡️➡️➡️ I enjoy both, but cook MUCH more 🍗🥑🍆🥦
4️⃣curly vs. straight hair ➡️➡️➡️ I enjoy both, but find keeping straight hair more “tamed”
5️⃣ tutoring reading vs. spelling ➡️➡️➡️ TIED ✏️📚
6️⃣ leggings vs. jeans ➡️➡️➡️ leggings hands down
7️⃣ taking photos vs. making IG Reels ➡️➡️➡️ taking photos all the way (it’s easier) 📸🤳
8️⃣ wedges vs. sneakers ➡️➡️➡️ combo wedge sneakers are my jam
9️⃣ texting vs. voice texting ➡️➡️➡️ voice texting AND voice messages are my jam, but to get that emoji, you have to text
🔟 reading fiction vs. nonfiction ➡️➡️➡️ I read nonfiction the majority of the time because I’m trying to learn all the things my Master’s degree left out 😂

Motivated to Meet Needs
#mondaymotivation 🍎 it has been very very busy over here in the #gennyofalltrades headquarters LOL 😂
⭐️and by headquarters, I mean the kids’ homes that I have been going in and out of to meet, test, evaluate, and decide how to best move forward in terms of Orton-Gillingham tutoring for suspected reading and spelling weaknesses.
🥰 I am absolutely blessed with the number of referrals sent my way so I can partner with families who believe “something is just missing.”
🧠✏️ after a 90 minute- 2 hour evaluation, I am often able to uncover what truly is missing and where instruction should be targeted moving forward.
🧠🧠🧠 remember there is a lot of multitasking and working memory going on for myself during the evaluation because ➡️I have so many assessments to administer while positively reinforcing the child for good student behaviors to then lead up to earning a game at the very end.
🥰It is a really wonderful feeling to bring that type of enlightenment to somebody who has been feeling in the dark.
How have you been feeling motivated lately to meet the needs of your students and families?⤵️⤵️⤵️

Spelling = Confidence
#motivationmonday ✏️one of the best ways to boost a child’s confidence is when they nail spelling!
📝While the modern day era makes it faster to spell check with those colorful squiggle lines, it is still vital that kids know how to use pen-and-paper to spell with automaticity.
✅✅✅How is this achieved? Through repetition, meaningful instruction, and explicit teaching of the spelling rules.
✏️To teach spelling effectively, stick to ONE spelling rule/strategy at a time.
Combine the sense of 👀seeing (eyes), 👂🏼hearing (ears), and 👇🏼touching (fingers) repeatedly until the automaticity has been achieved.

Variety in Reading
#motivationmonday 🍎
😅let us not take for granted the power of reading words in a list rather than always having kids read from a text.
.
🤓Reading words in-text is a wonderful teaching tool that builds grammar, syntax, and vocabulary skills, which are all very important.
.
🚨However, kids need a variety of reading experiences and opportunities to help build their skills.
.
⭕️✏️⭕️✏️This is why I like to circle “back to basics” with word lists or even words on flashcards!
.
✏️❇️Isolating words is highly effective to ensure that the chid not only can decode them with automaticity, but also has full understanding of the word’s meaning and how it applies to their life (and the content at school they are learning about).
.
‼️‼️All of these diverse activities, when done in repetition, promote their extensive vocabulary which then leads to the ultimate overarching goal: successful reading comprehension.
.
📚📚Offering a variety of reading activities is an educational technique that is a great way to keep them engaged and ensure maximum intake of material.

Honoring the American Dream
🗽For #motivationmonday ..:
.
♥️I want to discuss something that has been influential in my life.
.
🗽My grandparents immigrated to New Jersey from Germany on this day 71 years ago - March 22, 1950 - after they survived multiple WWII concentration camps.
.
💪🏼They spent their lives building the American Dream for their kids (one being my dad!) so that my family could prosper and take advantage of every opportunity that the United States offered.
.
🗽This move and their subsequent struggle to prosper here is something that I am thankful for endlessly, and have sworn to myself to pay back in my own hard work to ensure that their work was not in vain.
.
♥️So, for motivation on this Monday, think of the people in your life who work to make it better, whether it is a parent, a grandparent, a teacher, or even a friend.
.
💪🏼Think about how, if they are willing to invest time and energy into their own lives to build a legacy, we could also be investing in ourselves even more through hard work and dedication to our goals.

💥This week is the one and only MOVIE STAR 🌟🎥🍿OCTAVIA SPENCER who has moved the world through her acting in meaningful movies like ⤵️
💜The Help

♥️My favorite quote from THE HELP is when Octavia tells the little girl over and over again: “You is smart. You is kind. You is important.”
🗣 Spencer isn't shy about talking about her reading issues, especially in interviews.
💎“I was a dyslexic child and am a dyslexic adult,” she has said. “That doesn't really mean that you're not intelligent—it just means that your brain functions differently.”

In the ring we have THE ONE, the only, MUHAMMAD ALI 🥊🥊🥊🥊💥💥💥
I had no idea Ali had this as part of his background, too!
“Muhammad Ali was not only a world famous athlete, but someone who struggled with and overcame his challenge with dyslexia. His story, efforts, and example have helped and motivated students around the world.”
📚He even created a whole reading series called GO THE DISTANCE to help other struggling readers‼️
Check it out here ➡️ http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/classroombooks/ali.htm

Women's History Month - Anna Gillingham
MARCH is WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH and I plan to highlight 5 amazing women that have contributed to the research and remedial techniques that aide students with dyslexia and related language & literacy deficits.
First up ➡️ Anna Gillingham, one of the founders of the Orton-Gillingham approach‼️
Anna Gillingham was an educator and psychologist, known for her contributions to the Orton-Gillingham method for teaching children with dyslexia how to read.
I ❤️ her quote because often educators (myself included in the past!) deflect from the main issue and finger-point about all the reasons why kids aren’t making progress. It’s just not ok anymore. Either we focus on the issue (the reading challenges) and how to appropriately remediate, or we don’t. We don’t need to fill in time fluffing about the family, the zip code, the genetics, etc.
Do you agree?

Third up ➡️ Louisa Moats
I ❤️ her quote because reading & spelling are not two separate entities! It’s absolutely crucial that both are given the appropriate attention when instructing, not just for our little ones but for our older kids, too!
Trying to avoid it will continue to persist… “what we resist, persists” so it really does PAY to invest in our students so they aren’t a experiencing difficulty later on🙏🏼

Fourth up ➡️ Faith Borkowsky
I ❤️ her quote because “meaningful instruction” is paramount for ALL learners, not just ones flagged for RTI, 504, and special education.
It’s also very likely that the term meaningful instruction has different definitions for different people - our instructors, parents, admin, and students!

I also ❤️ her original Ladder 🪜 of Reading 📖 visual to show how and why it’s important to support lowest functioning students AS WELL AS our highest functioning 🥰
